help with learning mandolin

I've found lots of good stuff. The only downside is it isn't organized. I've gone ahead and ordered a book or two.

One of the things I've decided to do is to learn to read music as well as I can read tab. I can get by on guitar, but not well enough. It's like, "OK... that's a 'C'... left ring finger goes here, pluck, wait a beat. Next is a 'D', that's an open string, pluck it." I can get by in Spanish that way, too. By the time I figure out what the guy said, the topic of the conversation has changed.

I figure there are buckets of fiddle music available, and ABC software can print out postscript sheet music. If I learn to read it, I have many more opportunities. And I'm one more leg up on eventually learning to play the fiddle, too.

I'm afraid I don't own a DVD player. Or a television. By choice.
