hi Cathy, Im more up on banjo stuff than tv triva but it is interesting trivia Banjo players are distinctive in style and every banjo is rather unique in sound. Doug definately played the banjo on the soundtracks. The number of bluegrbutt banjo players in the early 60s was very small. Interestingly right at this time, Don Zepp is running a poll to see what style of banjo playing is now dominating the world, on the Banjo L page, and from my involvement in 2 world wide web projects involving a total of about 80 banjo people, clawhammer, the old 2 finger style still seems dominate world wide by far over 3 finger often called "Scruggs" style after the man who popularized it the most. In the 60s before The Beverly Hillbillies and The Andy Griffith Show, which featured Flatt and Scruggs and the Dillards, most people had never heard 3 finger picking style. Doug Dillard began banjo playing in the 2 finger style and according to his bio, actually drove his truck off in a ditch when he first heard Earl Scruggs 3 finger style of playing on the radio he was so amazed at the sound of it. Young Doug wrote Earl a letter asking for advice and Earl counciled him to work at it, and he did. Dougs style of playing is very unique, and for myself, hearing him play "Jambouree" is a sure bet to cure the blues anytime. dillardsandy griffith show 154and about his sound Hi Michael, I'm a member of alt.banjo and have downloaded every mp3 that's been posted on the banjo addiction site.
