Since forming in 1990, the Old Blind Dogs have stood on the cutting edge of Scotland's roots revival. Taking their name from an Old-timey American song, the band has developed its own trademark style, with dynamic percussion and bluesy harmonica fueling the delicately-phrased melodies of traditional songs. In 2004, the Dogs won the coveted Folk Band of the Year honor at the Scottish Trad Music Awards. The band releases their ninth album, Old Blind Dogs Play Live, in 2005 on Green Linnet Records.

Old Blind Dogs' roots are in Aberdeenshire on Scotland's northeast coast, an area steeped in traditional songs and fiddle tunes. Their energetic mix of soaring fiddle playing and stirring pipes, punctuated with the pulse of djembe and conga, has audiences dancing in the aisles. The Dogs tour the globe from intimate clubs to international festivals, including a performance before England's Prince Charles, a confirmed fan. "Old Blind Dogs play with a compelling energy and intoxicating rhythm," says The Scotsman, "as players and audience seem to share a wild ecstasy of emotion." The new CD Play Live captures this ebullient 'Caledonian groovery.

Founding member Jonny Hardie hails from Aberdeenshire, and began playing the fiddle at a young age. His powerful traditional fiddling, sweet and gritty by turns, is at the heart of the Dogs' sound. Vocalist Jim Malcolm, named Songwriter of the Year in the Scots Trad Music Awards, is regarded as one of Scotland's finest traditional singers and songwriters. Rory Campbell is a brilliant young piper, playing the small pipes as well as low whistle, and his original tunes are highlights of the band's repertoire. Aaron Jones, originally hailing from the North of Ireland, is an innovative multi-instrumentalist on bouzouki, guitar and bbutt, as well as a fine singer. Fraser Stone is a specialist on African percussion, who has been playing since the age of six.

The Dogs made their Green Linnet debut in 1999 with The World's Room. Time Out London called the album "splendid" and MOJO "an outstanding label debut." The band's second Green Linnet album, Fit? (a Scots Doric expression meaning "what?") in 2001 brought the Dogs further acclaim. Q Magazine called it "some of the finest traditional playing of the year." The album was a finalist for Celtic Album of the Year by the buttociation for Independent Music, and the band was nominated for Britain's BBC-2 Award for Best Folk Band. The Gab o Mey (2003) meaning "the end of winter; the beginning of May" in Scots dialect, continued the tradition of "high-energy playing and intensely felt singing that have made them one of the most popular contemporary Scottish folk groups."
