hi Ryan, Bluegrbutt bands do have unique problems having many shows outside or just in no walled tents. Wind, is a big problem. It can distort soundwaves something awfull, much more than the average joe thinks. Just try tuning your instrument in front of a fan sometime, or below a ceiling fan, youll see what I mean. Always try to set up out of a cross wind if possible.
Ive seen Del McCourey perform with 1 mic and I like that notion, but then again hes got money for the best equipment and soundmen to run it.
In our band we use a pick up on the bbutt, cause thats not easy to swing back and forth to a mic and the pic up , picks up better than a mic for bbutt frequencies. We set up as close as we can be comfortable with to hear each other, needed espcially on singing harmony. We set up 2 mics at instrument level, one left one right and one mic to sing over. One of the 2 mics we dedicate almost souly to the guitar as its the quietest of the instruments. The dobro, banjo and mando and if we have fiddle, share the other mic. As we do solo breaks, we step into the mics a bit more, and we do the jostling thing back and forth too. Turning our instruments into and away from the mic. We set up the speakers out in front to avoid feedback As with most small bands we cant afford to have a sound guy out in front adjusting levels, so it requires some good rehearsals to get things balanced properly. And listening to each other is something we rehearse in practice just like all the other skills required.
Like most bands theres always something more you need. We need better monitors and a better effects processor. Amplyfied sound always sounds flat, loses the natural resonance of acoustic flavor, so you have to add it back with reverb and other "artificial" effects.
