Multiculturalism and Diversity 363

Pleasant or not, and in spite of rabid nitwits on both sides of the debate, this is an issue which needs attention, and soon. If you wish to see the results of multiculturalism at work in the real world, look no further than large Canadian cities like Toronto and Vancouver. They have altered almost beyond recognition in the past 20 years, and not for the better.

Violent crime in Toronto is at an all time high, and even the most liberal members of society there have agreed that the vast majority of gun related crimes have been perpetrated by non-white immigrants, both legal and illegal.

In the late 70s I was driven out of 2 apartment buildings in Toronto when the influx of 'new Canadians' flooding into the building made it impossible to get away from the appalling smells of curried Addidas or what ever they ate even in my own apartment. Shortly after the smells came the roaches. I moved. Same thing happened again in less than 6 months. By 1982 the village-like suburb into which I had moved both home and business had started to be overwhelmed by incoming Sommalis and Jamaicans. In a matter of months it went from being a quiet, safe community to having break-ins and robberies on a regular basis. When it got to the point at which my store was the only one in our mall which had yet to be robbed, I sold out and moved 220 miles northeast into the bush.

At present the largest single budget line item for the Toronto school board is English as a Second Language. It is consuming so much money that other, more conventional courses are having to be dropped.

Kevin - well said. I live in South Africa and it is as multicultural and diverse as it gets. Our country's "other" name is The Rainbow Nation. I think we have something...

Think long and hard before embracing the principal of multiculturalism.
