Knowleman said some wild stuff in
Apparently not well enough informed to know that there are racists and bigots in every place on the earth, including jolly old England (which says nothing about the whole, or any genre of art coming from there), and that Usenet is a bastion of "free-speech" (as such) with many teeny-weeny folk trolling for other teeny-weeny folk with self-righteous dispositions. (hmm, have I been trolled here? ;-)
I think the state of natural buttociation you refer to is not in fact, but in mind alone.
You will no doubt hear many references to religion in folk music, of all types, including bluegrbutt, to the extent that the writers and artists are religious, but this has little or nothing to do with your fears of 'fundamentalism', and nothing at all to do with George Bush...or any other politician.
Well-informed Europeans might need to practice making some distinctions, and we all would do well to separate ourselves from half-baked politics, just a wee-bit.
BTW, this fellow is from a central state as well:
