Tom Smith Tom... First off, find out if there are any jams in your area. Talk to fiddlers, most (some aren't willing) but most are more than happy to sit you down and show you some tricks and licks. Maybe even "teach" you for a smaller fee than the teachers you know of. Don't be shy...ask questions, talk to these people, you're love of the music will shine through and they'll help you out. While we may not want to remember...all fiddlers were horrible players at one time or another, and we understand how frustrating that start up can be. Also, listen, listen, listen, listen to as much music as you can, both bluegrbutt and old-time. Most bluegrbutt fiddlers started out playing old time tunes before moving into to bluegrbutt. As for videos-DVD's...start with the most basic you can find. Check Murphy Henry's website, also Homespun Tapes, and Janet Davis Music sites. All these folks have some great begining tapes-dvds. One great Nashville fiddler once told me, "no matter how new to fiddling you are...play like you know HOW to play" He meant with pbuttion and love of the music..the rest will come with time. Keep at it!
