THE WHITES HONORED IN THE COUNTRY MUSIC ASSOCIATION'S 'ALBUM OF THE YEAR' CATEGORY Nashville, Tennessee Ceili Music recording artists, The Whites, added to their impressive list of career accomplishments Wednesday evening as they were honored at the 35th Annual Country Music Awards in the 'Album of the Year' category for their involvement in the movie soundtrack, O Brother, Where Art Thou? The CMA embraced O Brother, Where Art Thou?, recognizing the film soundtrack album twice, including the esteemed 'Album of the Year' Award and 'Single of the Year' Award for "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow." The father-daughter Whites trio was on hand to receive accolades from a standing crowd of industry professionals, joined by their O Brother soundtrack colleagues including, album producer T-Bone Burnett, movie producers, the Coen Brothers, Ralph Stanley, Emmylou Harris, Dan Tyminski, Gillian Welch, and Alison Krauss. The Whites felt very honored for the recognition --"we're just thrilled," said Cheryl of winning the award. "None of us involved ever dreamed of what it could become. It really has been a new experience for all of us I mean we all knew it was good music from the first, but to have it be recognized like this is just great, especially without the support of a lot of mainstream country radio." To date, Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?, has sold more than 3 million albums worldwide, revealing that American roots music can still touch a nerve deep in the country. The Whites' involvement in O Brother has contributed to an already impressive year for the trio. In May, The Whites won an INDIE Award for 'Best Country Album,' for their Ceili Music debut album, A Lifetime in the Making. In June, The Whites added a Golden Voice Award to their list of achievements, winning the 'Golden Voice Group' Award at Fan Fair's third annual awards show in Nashville. Their involvement in the O Brother soundtrack also translated into recognition at the International Bluegrass Music Association's (IBMA) Awards Show in October, where The Whites won two awards, including 'Album of the Year'. The Whites have made numerous appearances this year in promotion of O Brother, including performances at New York City's Carnegie Hall and on The Late Show with David Letterman. In addition, The Whites are scheduled to participate in the newly scheduled 18-city "Down from the Mountain" tour, featuring music from O Brother, which will begin in Lexington, Kentucky January 25th. Ceili Music was founded by Ricky Skaggs and his partner Stan Strickland in 1997. True to the origin of the word--an informal gathering of friends and family for music and song--Ceili features the music of traditional, contemporary, and gospel bluegrass artists. Ceili's roster also includes: The Del McCoury Band, Jerry & Tammy Sullivan, Mountain Heart, and Paul Brewster. 11/15/01 |
